11.31 Smart Card Applications

Smart cards can be used for a range of healthcare related applications including patient identification and the storage of basic medical data such as drug allergies and blood group. In the coming years there will be a degree of cross over between the functionality of smart cards and mobile phone SIM cards. However the smart card provides a low cost means of storing and transporting basic medical data and could, as low cost card readers come onto the market, provide an important step towards the patient taking ownership of their own electronic medical records.
